Hokusai in Dahlem

30.08.2011 to 27.11.2011

The centrepiece of this temporary exhibition is a rare scroll painting by the painter and printmaker, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), which the patron and collector Klaus F. Naumann presented to the museum as a permanent loan.

The painting shows the Chinese immortal Wang Qiao flying on a goose. The signature 'Brush of Manji, a man crazy about pictures, at the age of 78' is a rare example of Hokusai's combination of artist names, seen on only few other paintings, and serves to date the painting as from 1837.

In this particular exhibition the scroll forms a dialogue with other works by Hokusai's contemporaries-many of them his direct rivals-as well as with pupils of Hokusai. In addition, a dozen illuminating painted works illustrate the painterly progression in the floating world of Hokusai.
