Helmut Newton's Private Property

03.11.2004 to 04.01.2026
Museum für Fotografie

For over 20 years, the Helmut Newton Foundation has been showing the successful permanent exhibition Helmut Newton's Private Property on the ground floor, as well as exhibitions on the first floor dedicated to the work of Helmut Newton, his wife Alice Springs, his companions, and selected internationally renowned collections.

Every six months, different aspects of his extraordinary photographic work are presented and juxtaposed with other renowned photographers. This dialogue between Newton’s work on the one hand and internationally significant photographers on the other has already taken place on several occasions, in juxtaposition with David Lachapelle and James Nachtwey, Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson, Greg Gorman and Frank Horvat, Mario Testino and Guy Bourdin, Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi, David Lynch and Saul Leiter – and this dialogue continues.

The exhibition rooms of Helmut Newton's Private Property use personal items to illustrate important stages in Helmut Newton’s life and the development of his work. On display are, for example, his cameras and accessories, which he used to equip his models, early original photographs from his childhood in Berlin and his first fashion pictures from Australia, parts of his library and a reconstruction of his office in Monte Carlo, the majority of his own publications and some of his camera equipment. Posters from his exhibitions and numerous publications of Helmut Newton’s photographs in books, magazines, and fashion magazines from the 1960s until his death in 2003 prepare visitors for the special exhibitions of Helmut Newton on the first floor of the museum.

Newton’s special relationship with his hometown of Berlin, which he was forced to leave in 1938, is highlighted by historical photographs from his childhood and youth. The permanent exhibition also shows some of the stages he completed on his way to becoming a fashion photographer in Australia, including his future wife June as an actress and model, on the private photo wall.
