13.07.2005 to 03.10.2005
The exhibition, "Goya - Prophet of Modernism" is the outcome of international co-operation between the National Gallery Berlin, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. From 12 July to 3 Oktober 2005 the exhibition will be on show at the Old National Gallery in Berlin. Following that, from 18 October to 8 January 2006, it will be shown at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
For Berlin and Vienna the exhibition "Goya - Prophet of the modern age" is an outstanding premiere. With almost 70 major paintings and a wide-ranging selection of Goya's drawings this is the first major Goya exhibition in the German-speaking countries.
The exhibition focuses on Goya's importance as the Spanish pioneer of the European modern age. Based on a selection of his major works, it demonstrates how far his artistic exploration anticipated the developments of the 19th and 20th centuries, with their preoccupation with artistic autonomy.
