Neue Nationalgalerie
The exhibition shows for the first time the long-term loan from the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation to the Neue Nationalgalerie.
The artist Gerhard Richter (born 9 February 1932 in Dresden) has permanently donated over 100 works to the Neue Nationalgalerie. The works reflect the great diversity of his artistic output, ranging from paintings created using traditional techniques with brushes or squeegees to completely different forms of design. In addition to canvas and paint, from the outset Gerhard Richter always used other materials and techniques. For example, he used photographs as models for motifs or painted over them himself with colours. Glass in particular is an important element in his art. The transparent surface reflects the world as if in a window. Depending on the arrangement, format or colouring, this results in very unique visual worlds.
The centrepiece of the current exhibition is the installation 6 Standing Panes (2002/2011). The towering glass panes create an exciting interplay between transparency and reflection, challenging us to re-experience our own position in space. The work is constantly changing through light, movement and perspective. It invites us to reflect further on the relationship between visibility and reality.
Please note: The Birkenau Cycle from 2014 is currently on loan as part of the retrospective “GERHARD RICHTER” at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. The works will return to the Neue Nationalgalerie in spring 2026.
An audio tour in German and English takes you through the exhibition Gerhard Richter. It is available as a free app download or on rental devices in the museum. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices.
The exhibition is curated by Joachim Jäger and Maike Steinkamp.
