Museum für Asiatische Kunst
To coincide with the 150th anniversary of the start of diplomatic ties between Japan and Germany, the Museum of Asian Art is unveiling the first ever showing of the cycle of oil paintings by the artist Udo Kaller (born 1943), which were created between 2007 and 2009 and based on Katsushika Hokusai's (1760-1849) series of woodcuts 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji'. Kaller's works will be presented alongside a selection of original sheets by Hokusai.
Kaller's works can be seen as a homage to Hokusai and are a testament to the fascination that his work still continues to exert on European artists today. Parallel to the exhibition, from 30 August until 27 November, one of the few paintings Hokusai ever produced will be on show as a temporary loan from Klaus F. Naumann in the gallery that bears the patron's name, at the Museum of Asian Art.
At the same time, the Gropius Bau will be holding its own major Hokusai retrospective, on show from 26 August to 24 October 2011.
