Dragon between Clouds
On the return to Berlin of a triptych by Kano Tan'yû after restoration in Japan

03.11.2009 to 14.02.2010

The centrepiece of the 'Dragon between Clouds’ exhibition is formed by an important hanging scroll triptych by the painter Kano Tan’yû (1602-1674) which, thanks to the generous support from the Sumitomo Foundation has been elaborately restored by a team of Japanese experts and which, now cleaned and remounted, has once again gone on display in Berlin for the first time after a period several years. The scroll depicts Feng Gan (Japanese: Bukan), an paradigmatic figure in Zen Buddhism, flanked by dragons in clouds.

The exhibition is complemented by other pictures by painters of the Kano School and their contemporaries, all predominantly executed in monochrome ink dating from the 16th and 17th century. Among the pieces on display are two loans from private collections, on show to the public for the first time here.
