Door to History

18.06.2026 until further notice
Alte Nationalgalerie

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Alte Nationalgalerie, a historic room is being redesigned. It offers a new way to experience the eventful architectural history of the museum.

The Alte Nationalgalerie, part of the Museum Island UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, is a unique architectural monument that reflects the diverse history of the collection. As early as 2001, during the general renovation, a historic room on the first exhibition floor was opened to the public. Formerly part of a sculpture hall spanning over 300 m², the room preserves traces of 150 years of architectural history—from the museum’s founding through the installation of the so-called Justi Cabinets to the destruction of World War II.

To mark the anniversary, this room is being redesigned, and the glimpse into the history of the Alte Nationalgalerie is being expanded to include a new cabinet. Visitors can immerse themselves visually in the historic room. The accompanying cabinet offers insights into the collection’s history through three monumental works from the National Gallery. Additionally, visitors are invited to suggest topics in the “My National Gallery” module.
