As a supplement to the MoMA-exhibition at the New National Gallery, the Museum of Applied Arts, located nearby at the Kulturforum presents its collection's masterpieces of design, which can also be found among MoMA's collections. A selection of forty pieces - mainly from both museums' core collection of seat furniture - will provide a comprehensive overview on the development of modern production in the 20th century, notably from the 1920s to 1990s.
Among the pieces on display are Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's Armchair "Red/Blue" (1923), as well as tubular metal furniture by Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. The visitor is also invited to look at works like the "Leg Splint" (1942) and the "Rocking Chair" (1950), by the famous American designer team Charles and Ray Eames. Also included are Frank O Gehry's "Wiggle Side Chair" (1972) and a piece designed by Phillip Starck: "Jim Nature" - a portable TV set with a casting that can be turned into compost.
An accompanying presentation with the title "7+7= fourteen times young design made in Berlin and New York" features products designed by seven young Germans and seven Americans. During the showing of the MoMA exhibition their exclusive designs can be purchased in the New National Gallery's museum's shop.
