The design competition for ‘Das Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts’ (Museum of the 20th Century) is now complete. An exhibition at the Kulturforum will display the winning entry and the 39 other designs submitted for the new museum building at the Kulturforum. The show will run from 18 November 2016 to 8 January 2017.
In late October 2016 the jury selected the design by the Basel architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron as the competition winner, thus completing the design competition that began in April 2016. In the initial qualifying round 40 national and international teams of architects and landscape architects submitted their designs for a new museum of 20th-century art at the Kulturforum. These submissions were narrowed down to a group of 10 finalists, teams who qualified in the initial round of the open competition and architectural firms invited to submit entries.
From 18 November 2016 to 8 January 2017 an exhibition in the lower Special Exhibition Gallery at the Kulturforum will display all 40 submitted designs.
The new building at the Kulturforum will provide an exhibition space where the internationally significant collections of 20th-century art can be permanently displayed together for the first time. At the same time, the new museum building provides an opportunity to develop an urban solution suited to the particular circumstances of the Kulturforum.
