To this day, calligraphy is regarded throughout China as the greatest of all art forms. The aesthetic principles it follows are similar to painting, using a brush to apply ink to paper and silk.
The changes in direction and pressure used while handling the brush appear as a succession of points and lines that taken together reflect the writer’s personality. These points and lines lend an abstract quality to the work, allowing it to be appreciated even by audiences that cannot read Chinese.
The 33 works in the exhibition reveal the spectrum of the various styles of calligraphy: seal script, clerical script, standard script, running script, and cursive script. They also demonstrate the range of this artistic tradition, in which the calligrapher values imitation, creativity, and self-expression above all else.
