Kanadehon chûshingura (The Treasury of Loyal Vassals) remains one of the most important and popular plays in the repertoire of Japanese kabuki theatre. The play is based on a real incident in 1701 and is a revenge tale about the legendary 47 ronin (leaderless samurai) who avenge the death of their lord, Asano Naganori, to restore his honour. The exhibition illustrates the plot of each of the eleven acts with pictorial depictions of the key scenes in woodblock prints dating from the Tokugawa period. The impressions reflect the subject’s popularity in the ukiyo-e of the 18th and 19th centuries and are adaptations, in the graphic medium, of scenes from the theatre. The exhibition has been developed in cooperation with students of East-Asian art history at the Institute of Art History of the FU Berlin.
