24.06.2011 to 17.07.2011
This year, as in previous years, the Art Library will be presenting, in conjunction with 100 Beste Plakate e.V., the results of the competition for the 100 best poster designs of the previous poster year. More than ten years after its inception, the competition that was once confined to poster production in Germany alone has since established itself as an international competition among the German speaking countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
This year, the jury was headed by Claude Kuhn (CH) and comprised the collective 2x Goldstein (D), as well as Elvira Barriga (D), Erich Brechbühl (CH) and Peter Klinger (A). Together, they sifted through 1600 submissions from more than 500 applicants, finally whittling them down to 53 winners from Germany, 45 from Switzerland and 2 from Austria. Berlin forms the first stage of the touring exhibition, with the finalists due to be presented later in Nuremberg, Dornbirn, Luzern, Vienna and Essen. The positive uptake of the competition is reflected in the constantly increasing numbers of participants and visitors, and confirms the great interest in current concerns in modern poster design and, more widely, in the handling of text and image in public spaces.
Unlike in previous years, the exhibition layout and design for this year's show is not the result of a student project. The exhibition planning is instead the fruit of a collaboration, headed by Sascha Lobe, between two German offices, both based in Stuttgart: büromünzing designer+architekten bda and L2M3. The L2M3 design offices were also responsible for all printed material related to the show, including award certificates, invites, the exhibition poster and year book. The graphic designers involved in the communication concept for the show have themselves received a 'Certificate of Typographic Excellence' from the New York-based TDC (Type Directors Club) - thus garnering perfect publicity for the competition.
The year book for the exhibition is priced €35.
