Kollektivkörper – Performanceprogramm für die Lygia Clark Retrospektive
At the end of the 1960s, Clark developed her first group performances, which she continued to test with her students from 1972 onwards during a teaching stay at the Sorbonne in Paris. With the help of elastic objects made of plastic sheeting, rubber netting or thread, the participants were encouraged to take part in interactive, community-building actions. Clark's role as artist was to make suggestions, which the group implemented experimentally. According to Clark, the interaction of the bodies in the space created temporary, organic works of art, which she called Estruturas Vivas (Living Structures) or Arquiteturas Biológicas (Biological Architectures). The communal experiences aim to form a Corpo Coletivo (collective body), which for Clark set in motion a process of change involving the body and mind. The result is a holistic identity in which the object becomes the subject.
