As part of the European Cultural Days, the MEK presents a different country, region, city or community in Europe each year. This year's Cultural Days and the special exhibition "Buzzing Slovenia. Of Bees and People" are all about Slovenia and the country's close relationship with its unique nature and especially with its bees.
Slovenia is considered the cradle of modern beekeeping. The knowledge of life with bees has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and continues to develop through constant research. Slovenian beekeeping has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2022. Honey products are part of the national culture in the country with the highest density of beekeepers in the world. They stand for living traditions, unique craftsmanship, sustainable use of resources and the harmonious coexistence of people, animals and nature.
This year, the Culture Days will bring the diversity of Slovenian culture to Berlin with a four-week program of events from June 11 to July 9: The focus will be on Slovenia's deep connection to its nature. For example, there will be the opportunity to enjoy honey with all senses together with experts and to visit Berlin's city bees together with Slovenian beekeepers. As Slovenia is also the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2023 under the motto "Honeycombs of Words", a reading with two excellent Slovenian authors is a must. Concerts by renowned bands, culinary events with regional delicacies, workshops, guided tours and talks round off the program.
The 19th European Cultural Days take place in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Berlin, the Slovenian Cultural Center Berlin (SKICA Berlin), the Slovenian Tourist Office, the Slovenski etnografski muzej and the Čebelarski muzej Radovljica.
