The film Ganz ungültig, nur ein Versuch takes Anton Bruckner’s (1824–1896) Symphony No. 0 as its point of departure – a work the Austrian composer himself declared “invalid”. Annika Kahrs uses this so-called Die Nullte (No. Zero) as a material and thematic foundation to examine processes of rejection, revision and reinvention. Five musicians play Bruckner’s “No. Zero” in a concert hall. During the performance, the original score changes because it has been handwritten, erased, overwritten or supplemented by young people who are involved in music reception and production in different situations. In this way, classical interpretation and contemporary forms of composition intertwine to create a new piece of music.
