On Thursday, April 2nd, right after the BRANCUSI exhibition closes for the day, join us for a free live piano concert by the celebrated French pianist David Kadouch.

A specialist in twentieth‑century French music, Kadouch will take us through some of the deceptively simple but fiercely innovative music that was a constant presence in Brancusi's studio – with a special focus on the work of Brancusi's close friend and artistic ally, the maverick composer Erik Satie (1866–1925).

For Constantin Brancusi, music was essential. He played the violin and the guitar, owned one of the best record collections in Paris, and even sculpted his own loudspeakers. Of the avant-garde artists who frequented his studio, Satie (rivaled only by Marcel Duchamp) was certainly the one he felt closest to.

The two intuited a kinship in their artistic approaches – both were well ahead of their contemporaries and occasionally misunderstood in their unerring pursuit of refined simplicity and reduction. As the art historian Virginia Barbu describes it, "Brancsui gave form to Satie's music, created a visible 'body' for it. Both pursued a seeming paradox in their creations: Satie sought immobility in music; Brancusi, movement in statuary."

David Kadouch (*1985) is a French pianist and chamber musician whose international career has brought him to major venues including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Paris Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, the Salle Pleyel, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. He has collaborated with artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Daniel Barenboim und Renaud Capuçon. A prizewinner at the Beethoven Bonn Competition and the Leeds International Piano Competition, he is widely admired for the poetic intensity and refinement of his playing, with one critic praising his "outstanding gift for delicacy".
