Eric Otieno Sumba in conversation with the artist (in English)
Since the mid-1990s, South African-born artist Candice Breitz has been exploring how personal and collective identities are formed. While her earliest work focused primarily on issues of gender and the violent ways in which "race" is constructed and perpetuated through imagery, her focus has broadened over the past three decades to additionally consider how stereotypes presented in mass media impact personal and collective perceptions of identity. The artist discusses her practice with sociologist and political scientist Eric Otieno Sumba.
