Hamburger Bahnhof on Tour
In the performance the lord loves changes, it’s one of his greatest delusions, staged at the Heilige-Geist-Kirche, Kahrs combines organ music with a whistling choir that deconstructs the musical material to the point of exhaustion. Based on the work Gay Guerrilla (1979) by the American composer Julius Eastman – itself derived from Martin Luther’s chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (before 1529) – the piece unfolds as a multilayered commentary on transformation, resistance, and the symbolic power of musical quotation. Originally conceived as a video work, the performance will be presented live for the first time in a church – a space imbued with both sacred and political resonance.

In spring 2026, as part of Annika Kahrs’ exhibition, a performance programme will take place that, for the first time, offers an overview of the artist’s performances from the past sixteen years. In these works too, Kahrs explores musical structures as well as the codes and parameters of music production, performance practice, and listening habits. By questioning virtuosity and deliberately dissolving traditional forms, she creates new ways of experiencing music.
The performances form part of the event series Hamburger Bahnhof On Tour. With this series, marking its 30th anniversary, the museum places a special focus on collaboration and exchange with other cultural partners across Berlin.
