The Art Library is both a specialised academic library for art historical research and a collection of graphic art consisting of multifarious holdings from six centuries worth of the applied arts. It collects and allows access to drawings and prints produced using a variety of techniques as well as photographs, posters, folios of advertising artwork, illustrated books and book objects.
Having examined and documented the collection objects, the conservators work on them individually and according to the damage they have sustained. The works of art handled here are predominantly made of paper, tracing paper, cardboard, paperboard, fabric, leather and parchment. The preservation of the historical substance of the respective objects, as well as the use of conservation measures to ensure their long-term stability, are a priority.
Alongside care of the collection, the conservators look after works that are on loan nationally or internationally, as well as after the Art Library's own exhibitions. The variously weighted competences within the team make it possible to optimise the conservation and conservation of multifarious materials. The conservation department offers the opportunity of internships which run in connection with a university course in conservation.
