Re-unveiling of the market gate of Miletus after completion of the initial phase of restoration
After several years of work, we are proud to announce that the first phase of restoration on the market gate of Miletus has now been completed in the Collection of Classical Antiquities in the Pergamonmuseum, marking an important milestone in its overall restoration!
Autumn 2008 marks a decisive stage in the lengthy restoration process of the market gate of Miletus. The scaffolding which was first erected in December 2005, together with the transparent protective wall that was attached to the structure and the tunnel passage to the Museum of the Ancient Near East were all dismantled in October 2008, once the initial restoration phase had been completed. All this was preceded by various analyses lasting several years, as well as temporary protection measures and a partial deconstruction and subsequent reconstruction of the structure. Despite the fact that the measures were somewhat reduced in the scope as compared to those originally drawn up in an earlier plan, the procedure is still the largest intervention made to the structure since the measures to repair and enhance it were taken after the Second World War in 1952/53.
The gate's current state is not final; it does however form a vitally important intermediary stage on the way to the definitive completion of the restoration work. The second and conclusive phase of the restoration will take place only once work on renovating this part of the Pergamonmuseum has begun. The final treatment of the monument's surfaces is, however, still pending and will entail both the systematic cleaning and restoration of the original marble structural elements and the various sections which were added to it in cast stone, marble and plaster, as well as the final implementation of the new added parts, including the tonal coordination to their surroundings.
