Thomas Struth: Pergamon Museum
On display together in Europe for the first time, the Hamburger Bahnhof is exhibiting Thomas Struth's Museum Pictures, a photographic series taken in Berlin's Pergamon Museum.
In the late 1980s the Düsseldorf photographer Thomas Struth set out to tour the world's great picture galleries to undertake a photographic investigation of the tantalising interaction between museum-goers and objects on display.
From 1996 until 2003, while Struth was working on the Museumsinsel, he realised that the Pergamon Museum in particular met his personal vision of a museum, as its architectural and sculptural displays created an apt place for the remembrance of history and stories.
Struth's enormous, large-scale photographs resemble ideal mural paintings; but these 'murals' show how today's visitors respond to the halls with the Altar, and to the monumental Hellenistic and Roman architecture, creating spaces for contemplation and discourse.
These five pictures will be accompanied by a number of studies providing detailed insight into this exciting series, still a work in progress.
