Dschanaschia-Museum der Geschichte Gorgiens, Tiflis
Thu 20 September 2012 - Sun 13 January 2013
The exhibition Museumsinsel Berlin - Museum District Tbilisi. Keeping the Past - Facing the Future has opened at the Georgian National Museum in Tbilisi and will run until January 2013. It presents to the Georgian public the historical museum ensembles in both capitals and provides an insight into the measures needed to preserve and develop them to make them fit for the challenges of the 21st century.
In addition the exhibition also portrays how the museum complexes affect and interact with the surrounding urban space. Numerous cultural and educational facilities have established themselves in the direct vicinity of the museum district. This has only served to further highlight the fact that the museums act as an important motor for tourism and urban development.
The contents and layout of the exhibition have been developed in a joint project held between the Georgian National Museum, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Berlin-based graphic design office Polyform. Tbilisi is just the first stage of the touring exhibition, which will travel to various cities around the globe, raising public awareness about the Museumsinsel Berlin.
The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage) has been active in Georgia since 2010 as part of an EU-funded twinning project. The exhibition opening coincided with a conference on the future of museums, entitled Why Museum Now? and attended by luminaries from the world of cultural management.
The exhibition has received funding by the Museumsinsel Trustees, the Goethe-Institut and the EU.
