The excavations in Pergamon started in 1878 and brought forward most important archaeological finds like the "Great Altar" - finds that fascinate us till today. They allow us to answer questions as to how the settlement on the acropolis developed, questions about social structures have been and questions about technological achievements the residents of Pergamon had at their disposal.
The sculptures on display show how the kings of Pergamon had themselves and their enemies portrayed, how the arts were promoted and which gods were important to the residents.
