Werke aus der Gipsformerei und den Sammlungen der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin in Zusammenarbeit mit der Senatskanzlei
As part of a joint project with the Senate Chancellery of the State of Berlin, the National Museums is proud to present a selection of plaster works by Berlin sculptors from the period 1790–1850. The Alte Nationalgalerie, Sculpture Collection and Replica Workshop have together contributed unique, rarely seen works for the exhibition, which also features photographs from the Foundation of Prussian Culture’s picture archives to provide a greater understanding of the works and their historical and architectural context. With works by Johann Gottfried Schadow, Friedrich Tieck, Christian Daniel Rauch, Ludwig Wichmann, Friedrich Drake and many others, the exhibition offers visitors a panorama of the Berlin school of sculpture, which was of great importance not merely within German speaking countries, but for Europe as a whole.
There is no particular topographical focus to the selection of works on view, rather they give an impression of the force of the social upheavals faced by Prussia at the time and thus afford visitors an insight into the age of Humboldt.
The exhibition contains authentic works in plaster from the 19th century and brings together rough casts, models and many casts of exquisite quality which lay bare the technical aspect in the handling of this material, with the result that plaster’s inherent aesthetic value becomes apparent to the visitor. Most of all, however, the exhibition highlights the diversity of the art and various possible uses of plaster, by presenting architectural sculpture from the palace, as well as designs for urban monuments and portraits of famous individuals from the realm of culture and science. Plaster works such as those seen here heralded the rise of a new kind of culture of remembrance and the popularisation and appropriation by the upper middle classes of the art in the period of history between the revolutions.
The exhibition is closed on public holidays.
