100 years of archaeological fieldwork in north eastern Syria

Public Lecture held in English.

Opener of the international colloquium "A synopsis of 100 years of archaeological field research in north-east Syria" (21.-23.7.2011) as part of the special exhibition 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'

At the time that Max von Oppenheim commenced work at the site of Tell Halaf, the region of north-east Syria was a blank spot on the archaeological map. Since then, however, the region has increasingly been the focus of new research, especially in the last few decades. In this lecture we embark on a journey through a century of research history and commemorate the most important excavators and most significant sites of discovery. The evening also sets the tone for a scientific colloquium that immediately follows it, taking place on 22-23 July 2011 in Berlin.

Speaker: Dr. Joan Oates, McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge
