Speaker: Prof. Achim Preiß, Faculty of Design, Bauhaus-Universität, Weimar
The project was part of a planned expansion programme for the Museum Island conducted during the general building survey for the reshaping of Berlin as 'Reich capital'. A total of five giant museum buildings were planned for construction on both sides of the Spree alongside the Kaiser Friedrich Museum (now known as the Bode Museum). Four of these were to be assigned to the architect Wilhelm Kreis. In his plans, he envisaged a key role for the Egyptian-Ancient Near Eastern Museum in the new urban development. The scale of the plans reveals that the new buildings were supposed to house many more artefacts than those already found in Berlin.
