The Tell Halaf sculptures - a puzzle of 27,000 pieces

Lecture (held in German) at Urania as part of 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'

Speaker: Dr. Nadja Cholidis, Museum of the Ancient Near East Berlin

For more than 50 years the rubble from the sculptures from Tell Halaf lay in the vaults of the Pergamonmuseum. They were long considered irretrievably lost, after an aerial bomb utterly destroyed the exhibition building containing the 3000 year-old sculptures in the Second World War. In 2001 a small team of archaeologists and restorers from the Museum of the Ancient Near East resolved to undertake the near impossible and after eight years of work have managed to complete the greatest archaeological puzzle of the last few decades.
