Discovered - destroyed - delivered from oblivion. Monumental sculptures from Tell Halaf in Syria

Lecture (held in German) at Urania as part of 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'

The discovery of the site of the 3000 year old Aramaean palace of Tell Halaf marks the beginning of an exciting and fateful story that takes us from Cairo, through Syria and on to Berlin and which ends today in the Museum of the Ancient Near East. The protagonists: monumental gods, lions and mythological creatures, as well their excavator, the heir to a banking family and explorer of the Near East: Max Freiherr von Oppenheim.
