As chance will have it, Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) comes across his old friend Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) on an archaeological dig in Iraq, just after an Arab worker has been found strangled to death. Tensions rise when the young and beautiful wife of the head of the excavation, Dr. Leidner (played by Barbara Barnes and Ron Berglas respectively) wakes up in the night and claims to have seen a mysterious face in the window. Her fears that she is about to be murdered are not entirely unfounded....
Agatha Christie, then in her second marriage to the archaeologist Max Mallowan, often spent several months each year in Syria and Iraq. The working methods, various tasks and hierarchy at an excavation site were all well known to her, with the result that, from a scientific point of view at least, her novel provides an authentic portrayal of a dig in the 1930s. Tell Halaf was more than just a name to Agatha Christie, she actually travelled to the site in north-east Syria and later visited the Tell Halaf Museum with her husband.
