When Ahmed El Corda, son of the Sheik of Haddadin, forbids soldiers under the command of the Machredsch of Mosul from taking water from a watering hole in the desert, a fight ensures in which he is taken prisoner and ends up facing execution. Kara Ben Nemsi (Lex Barker) sets off with his trusty companion Hadschi Halef Omar (Ralf Wolter) to free their tribesman. On the way they encounter Sir David Lindsay (Dieter Borsche) and his servant Archie (Chris Howland) who join the campaign to set Ahmed free...
The film is based on Karl May's novel, first published in 1892, entitled 'Durchs wilde Kurdistan' (or 'Through Wild Kurdistan'). The author, who hardly ever ventured further than his home state of Saxony, drew his background knowledge for his stories from books, magazines and newspapers. This explains why his copy of Max von Oppenheim's travel report 'From the Mediterranean to the Persian Golf' was covered in notes and annotations. Karl May's only journey to the 'Orient' in 1899 also brought him to Cario where he visited Oppenheim, who at the time was working as a diplomat at the German general consulate in Egypt. Oppenheim was known as an expert on the customs and traditions of the Bedouin, as well as possessing an intimate knowledge of their tribal names and familial relationships.
