Historic sound recordings from Tell Halaf: Near-Eastern music on Edison cylinder records

Lecture held in German as part of the special exhibition 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'

During his excavations at Tell Halaf, Max von Oppenheim also had a phonograph among his belongings, which was used to make recordings on wax cylinders of singers and musicians at the excavation site. These recordings are now held in the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv (Phonograph Archive).
Recordings from Oppenheim's own collection will be played on a phonograph and details given on the history and importance of the recordings in the context of Arabic music.
