Phoenix from the ashes -
Seated tour (with portable stools) through 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'

German language

Up until the Second World War, Tell Halaf was mentioned in the same breath as the cities of Troy and Babylon. The site of an Aramaean royal palace dating from the early 1st millennium BCE that was discovered and unearthed by the German diplomat and 'Orient'scholar, Max von Oppenheim, caused a veritable sensation among archaeologists and scholars. And when Oppenheim unveiled the unique statues in Berlin in his own, specially created museum, the reaction from the general public was equally enthusiastic. All that changed, however, when in November 1943 a bomb hit the museum, destroying the monumental sculptures and relief panels as a result. Their destruction marked the beginning of both Tell Halaf and its discoverer fading into obscurity. ...Until, that is, a small team of archaeologists and restorers took up the impossible task of piecing together the sculptures from more than 27,000 shattered fragments.
