It is a hundred years ago that Max von Oppenheim started his digs on the slopes of Tell Halaf. Although he had never studied archaeology, his documentation of the finds were of an exemplary nature for his day and age. In the last few years digs have recommenced in Syria at the 3000 year-old site of the royal palace. How have the research methods and the questions posed by scholars changed in the interim? Can Oppenheim's findings now be substantiated, fine-tuned or even rectified? The most recent excavators of Tell Halaf are on hand to answer these questions.
