This unusual-sounding life's motto impressively sums up Max Freiherr von Oppenheim's (1860-1946) unshakable energy, resolve and joy of discovery. The discoverer and excavator of Tell Halaf - the site of a 3000 year-old royal palace in what is now north-east Syria - dedicated his life to exploring the 'Orient' and its history, using all resources available to him. At the same time, this motto of his also provides a clue to the fact that in his lifetime the son of a Jewish banking family was confronted with many strokes of misfortune. Extracts from his correspondence and anecdotes from his unpublished memoirs provide an entertaining and moving insight into the unusual career of this brilliant public figure.
