Who does that nowadays: pack it all in and do what their heart desires? Max von Oppenheim was originally supposed to take over his father's bank, but instead of grappling with files and figures, he followed his passion and moved to 'Arabia'. Expeditions from Egypt to India and from the Bosporus all the way to the Persian Gulf took him to areas of the world no European had ever set foot on before. When Bedouin one day spoke of 'strange stone figures', the explorer broke short his journey and, spurred on by curiosity, rode to the mysterious site. There, at Tell Halaf, he discovered beneath the desert sand the ruins of an ancient royal palace that was once adorned with massive figures of gods, animals and mythological creatures.
After the tour a fairy tale will be read out that a friend once presented to the excavator on his birthday.
