The exhibition on display in the Museum for Prehistory and Early History is a collaboration with the Olsztyn State Archives and the National Archaeological Museum in Warsaw and presents the exciting history of the discovery and restoration of the saved inventories of the former Prussia Museum in the former German city of Königsberg, now Kaliningrad.
Ever since the end of the Second World War, which also marked the end of an almost four hundred year old tradition of archaeological research by East Prussia, the inventories were believed to be lost forever. The castle in Königsberg, which housed the Prussia Museum, together with its comprehensive archaeological collection, was almost completely destroyed in the final phase of the war. Only after the fall of the 'Iron Curtain' did it become clear that parts of the collections and archives had ideed managed to survive the war and the postwar era. Among them was a part of the Prussia Museum's inventory books which were unearthed in excavations in 1968.
Alongside 15 inventory books with a total of 1584 pages, the Museum of Prehistory and Early History will also for the first time be presenting preserved objects from the archives and collections of the former Prussia Museum, which were handed to the Berlin Museum after the fall of the Berlin Wall from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and from the former Akademie der Wissenschaften (Academy of Sciences) of the GDR.
