Chinese Architecture by Ernst Boerschmann: the Exhibition 1912
From 1906 to 1909, Ernst Boerschmann was engaged in making a close study of Chinese architecture at the request of the German government in China. From all the records he made, both in the form of drawings and photographs, a selection totalling some 204 photographs were put on display in the Königliche Kunstgewerbe-Museum in Berlin from 4 June to 20 July, 1912.
A large part of the photographs are now to be found in the Art Library's collection. As part of a series of seminars, students from the East Asian Department of the Institute of Art History at the Freie Universität Berlin were asked to arrange a selection of these photographs. Boerschmann researched Chinese architecture in 14 provinces and divided his exhibition into the topics of 'Graves', 'Family shrines', 'Temples', and 'Pagodas'. As well as this, he also presented images of the various architectural complexes he visited in several provinces.
