Kupferstichkabinett
Fri 3 August - Sun 11 November 2007
This year's summer exhibition at the Kupferstichkabinett - Museum for Prints and Drawings shows a generous selection of prints from the most monumental work by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), the "Vedute di Roma". In this series, Piranesi, who had moved to Rome in 1740, portrayed the capital in 137 large-scale etchings, representing both ancient and modern sights of the Eternal City in his characteristic manner of surprising perspectives and images. The "Vedute" are a hommage to Rome and a unique blend of archaeology, imagination, and artistic virtuosity. The exhibition guides visitors through the city in the manner of a cicerone - a déjà-vu of a special kind: informative, surprising, entertaining.
