From Renaissance to Rococo. Four centuries of European Drawing, Painting and Sculpture
An exhibition at the National Museum of Western Art, Tokio and at the Kyushu National Museum, Fukuoka
In this major exhibition currently on show in Japan, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin presents for the first time more than 100 masterpieces from the collections of the Gemäldegalerie, Skulpturensammlung and the Kupferstichkabinett to a Japanese public.
The 33 paintings, 45 sculptures and 29 drawings allow a Japanese audience to see for themselves everything that is fascinating about European art history, presented here in all its facets. Vermeer's Young Woman with a Pearl Necklace, works by Dürer and Riemenschneider are noteworthy highlights among an array of exquisite exhibits. The selection of works from the Kupferstichkabinett, including masterpieces by Botticelli and Raphael, place a special focus on the art of drawing in the Italian Renaissance. The exhibition, influenced in part by historical photographs of installation views from the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum (now known as the Bode Museum), brings to life a piece of Berlin museum history.
The exhibition is on display from 13 June to 17 September at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and the Kyushu National Museum in Fukuoka from 9 October to 2 December.
