New Research Alliance for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage

Their aim is to significantly improve the conditions for the protection of cultural artefacts, to strengthen the development of new scholarly talent and to broaden the various national and international networks of parties involved. Leading on from the leading role played by conservation sciences in Germany before the Second World War, the task now is to lay the foundations for the consolidation and expansion of this branch of research for the future. Taking stock of the status quo at a national level is the first step in being able to establish precisely which measures need to be taken. In order to achieve a strengthening of the discipline, an awareness of its significance has to be instilled at both the public and political level.

With the formation of this alliance, a leap has been made into uncharted territory. For the first time ever one of the world's largest collections of cultural artefacts and its team of expert staff and advisors (the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage), together with one of the leading user-orientated technological research institutions in Germany (the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) and a unique cross-level scientific organization (the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft) will be combining their efforts to reach their common goal.
The new joint project will lead to innovative restoration and conservation techniques being developed, with cultural heritage being better protected as a result.
