The exhibition's
prime aim is to present a selection of the splendid collection with items
dating back to the beginning of the 19th century. The main emphasis of
the exhibition concentrates on the presentation of five so-called cultural
areas from which the museum has particularly old and valuable collections:
The Prairie and Plains, The Southwest, California, The Northwest Coast
and The Arctic. Special topics have been highlighted within these cultural
areas to provide insights into the characteristic types of materials used,
the economies or ceremonial features. The exhibition also addresses more
universal themes which have shaped our image of Indians: the stereotypes
of the honest savage and the evil savage, Karl May's 'Winnetou', show
Indians and many other subjects.
