Benjamin (Ben) Buffalo 1948-1994

Cheyenne

Cheyenne artist Benjamin Buffalo was born in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1948. He has studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of Oklahoma in Norman, among others. In the late 1970s he moved to Santa Fe. While his early paintings were very abstract, he later changed his style radically: with photographic precision he painted realistic pictures, thus becoming the most notable Native American representative of photorealism. His premature death kept him from continuing to develop his style, and only few of his paintings found their way into public collections.
