Minister and president visit Friedrich and Madonna

Alte Nationalgalerie

Two high-ranking politicians, the Chinese Vice Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xie Hangsheng, and Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, both took time during their recent visits to Berlin to view works of art at the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Xie Hangsheng visits the Alte Nationalgalerie

On 7 February 2018 Ralph Gleis, head of the Alte Nationalgalerie, led a delegation from the People’s Republic of China including vice foreign minister Xie Hangsheng on a special tour of the museum’s permanent exhibitions, guiding them past Impressionist masterpieces, Caspar David Friedrich, and Schadow’s ‘Prinzessinnengruppe’. The Chinese politician expressed his admiration for the artworks in his entry in the VIP guestbook of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz: ‘I thank the director (of the Alte Nationalgalerie) warmly for his tour, which helped us experience the boundless magic of the art.’

Donald Tusk visits the Gemäldegalerie

A high-ranking visitor also graced the halls of the Gemäldegalerie on 8 February 2018. Donald Tusk, Acting President of the European Council, is a long-standing connoisseur and devotee of the museum. While he primarily viewed northern European paintings during his previous visits, on this, his fourth visit to the museum he focused on Italian painting. He was particularly drawn to the world-famous Melun Diptych, currently on display in a special exhibition.
