Owners of a valid press pass receive complimentary admission to our permanent exhibitions and usually also to temporary exhibitions on show at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Please show your official press ID to staff at the ticket office before trying to enter the exhibition. Upon presentation of valid identification, you will be issued with a complimentary admission ticket.
For museums or temporary exhibitions where admission is only granted in allocated time slots (with a ‘Zeitfensterticket’), you will be issued with a ticket with a set admission time. This offer is subject to availability. Alternatively, you can book your own free time-slot ticket in advance online. All you then need to do is print it out and present it – along with your press pass – at the selected time to be granted direct admission.
We are unfortunately unable to grant free admission to anyone accompanying you without a press pass of their own
At press conferences given by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, you can usually purchase the official SMB catalogue accompanying the exhibition at a discounted price of 50 percent off the retail price. This offer only applies during press conferences. Regular retail prices apply at any other time in our museum gift shops or from the online shop of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. For inquiries, please contact the Publications Department of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin: publikationen[at]smb.spk-berlin.de
Requests for review copies should be addressed to the respective catalogue publisher. The publisher’s name and contact details are always stated in the relevant press release on the exhibition.
Official permission must be sought – and granted – before any filming, photography, or audio recording can take place in any museums belonging to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. We differentiate between two categories of requests: (1) filming, photography, and audio recording occurring as part of current press coverage on a particular museum and/or exhibition, (2) filming, photography, and audio recording unrelated to current press coverage on a particular museum and/or exhibition, as well as recordings made for commercial purposes, educational purposes, or as part of artistic projects. Before submitting your request, please read the guidelines for filming and photography at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin:

Filming, photography, and audio recordings as part of current press coverage on museums and exhibitions
Unless stated otherwise, photography and filming is always permitted during press conferences given by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin for the purposes of press coverage on the current exhibition or event. If you wish to make your own press images or record audio to cover a current feature at a time other than the press conference, we kindly request that you complete and submit your application at least two work days prior to the desired date. Your application will be processed by us as quickly as possible, and you will be notified whether the desired recordings have been approved.
Application for permission to make press images or record audio as part of current press coverage
Filming, photography, or audio recordings occurring outside current press coverage on museums and exhibitions or for commercial purposes, educational purposes or artistic projects are permitted in the various museums and venues of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin upon request, with requests requiring a little more time to be processed and approval granted. These kinds of requests are processed by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Visitor Services (‘Besucher Dienste’). Similar rules apply: your request must be submitted in advance and will require some days to be processed.
Filming, photography, and audio recordings unrelated to current press coverage on museums and exhibitions or for commercial purposes, educational purposes or artistic projects are possible upon request, with requests requiring a little more time to be processed and approval granted.
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is dedicated to expanding knowledge. Features and documentaries on art and cultural history often serve to bolster our museums’ educational activities. Such projects are coordinated by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Visitor Services in cooperation with the individual museums. The safety of museum objects and the safety of our visitors during opening times must always be respected. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin supports formats in print and audio-visual media that serve to communicate exhibition content of our displays and as part of general press coverage on the capital of Berlin as a tourist destination.
When feasible, we also approve of artistic and educational projects in film and media. Requests to use our museums or venues as backdrops or locations for feature films or advertising are carefully examined before being granted or turned down. In reaching a decision we take into account the publicity value of your proposal for the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the licence fee (open to negotiation), and the impact of your plans on museum contents and resources.
To ensure that we are able to handle all requests swiftly, please use the online form. Please fill out the application carefully. We will contact you as soon as possible to discuss the matter in more detail.
Requests with an underlying educational purpose:
Fulfilling the educational mission of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, we support proposals submitted by school pupils, students, doctoral students, teachers, and other individuals involved in education. What we require from you is written confirmation from the educational institution (your place of study/work) and a detailed description of your proposal.
Requests for artistic projects:
Artistic projects are examined regarding project content, our museum resources, and feasibility. What we require from you is a detailed description of your project and exact details regarding your intentions in using our resources.
In most cases a usage fee is charged for film, photographic, and audio recordings of objects or locations belonging to the SMB. Depending on the publicity and educational value for the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin itself, additional charges may be incurred through incidental licensing fees with our central online digital-image provider, the bpk – Bildagentur für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte.
Photographic images, in particular of exhibits at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, are available for a set fee from the picture library directly.
Should additional staff be required to supervise the filming or photography, then they will be supplied by a recognized contractor to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the expenses passed on to the user. Each additional attendant is booked for a minimum of four hours at a pre-arranged hourly rate of maximum 15 euros per hour.
If you require images of objects from our collections, for use outside current press coverage on our museums or exhibitions, for instance for use in advertising, commercial purposes, or in scholarly publications, please contact the bpk picture library. With over twelve million images in the areas of art, culture, and history, the bpk picture library is an ideal partner for picture editors. The bpk has scores of images for you to choose from that feature the museum buildings and collection objects of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. These images and the relevant permissions can be ordered and purchased for a fee, for use outside press coverage of current events at the SMB.
