Profile of the Münzkabinett

The Münzkabinett (Numismatic Collection) in Berlin is one of the most significant collections of coins and medals in the world. A representative selection of its holdings is on display at the Bode-Museum on the Museumsinsel Berlin. The Münzkabinett’s exhibition illustrates the history of humankind through the medium of coinage which has been an important means of visual communication for many centuries.

Finest examples of ancient minting can also be seen at the Altes Museum, where they complement the exhibition of classical antiquities from the Antikensammlung. In addition to coins, the Münzkabinett has an extensive collection of medals as well as banknotes, seals, tokens and jetons. The exhibition is rounded out by further examples of non-monetary forms of payment and a display of historic tools from the Berlin and other German mints.
