museum4punkt0 – Digital Strategies for the Museum of the Future

museum4punkt0 (or ‘museum4point0’) is a think tank for digital education work in museums. Sponsored by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM), the project encompasses participating institutions that represent museums in Germany in all their variety.

‘Mobile devices and social media have also profoundly changed the manner in which visitors receive information in museums; they expect – quite reasonably – these media to provide them with new ways of accessing familiar content’, said Hermann Parzinger, President of the SPK. Markus Hilgert, project manager of ‘museum4punkt0’, added: ‘The project’s aim is to develop digital tools with which we can redesign the museum as we know it today as a realm of experience for visitors’.

The project was launched in May 2017. Over the next three years, its mission will be to answer a range of questions. For example, how can most modern digital technologies be used to communicate content? How can they encourage communication? How can museum visitors use their smartphones, or their computers from home, to interact and participate?

The SPK is responsible for managing and coordinating the project. Other participating institutions are the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Humboldt Forum Kultur GmbH, the German Emigration Center Bremerhaven, the Deutsches Museum, the Carnival Museums of Langenstein and Bad Dürrheim (as well as other museums dedicated to Swabian-Alemannic carnival traditions), and the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz. The Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media is supporting the project with €15 million funding.

Each participating institution is responsible for implementing its own specific part of the project. This approach gives rise to applications that can serve as models for education work and visitor communication. The results of the project will be published on a shared interactive platform. The aim is for the information to benefit other museums as well by offering the broadest possible range of potential applications.
