Profile of the Antikensammlung

The Staatliche Museen’s Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) is one of the most important collections of ancient Greek and Roman art in the world. Its most famous and spectacular showpiece – the more than 2000-year-old monumental Pergamon Altar, a masterpiece of Hellenistic art whose boldly expressive sculptural frieze depicts the battle between the gods and the Giants – attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Architectural structures and elements, sculptures and vases, inscriptions, mosaics, bronzes, and jewellery: this dazzling array of classical antiquities is on permanent display at two separate sites on the Museumsinsel Berlin, in the Pergamonmuseum, and the Altes Museum. In addition to these two major exhibitions, the Antikensammlung also presents a selection of its objects at the Neues Museum to enrich the joint exhibitions held there by other departments of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Its presentation in the Neues Museum predominantly features art from the provinces of the Roman Empire and artefacts from its extensive Cyprus collection.

Renovation of the Pergamonmuseum

As part of the Museumsinsel Master Plan, the Pergamonmuseum has been undergoing staggered renovations since 2013 based on plans by the architectural firm O. M. Ungers. The undertaking is being carried out in two construction phases.

During the renovation’s first construction phase, the hall with the Pergamon Altar, the North Wing and the Hellenistic Hall are closed. The second construction phase begins on 23 October 2023 and requires the closure of the Pergamonmuseum’s South Wing with of the Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate, the Processional Way, and the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum for Islamic Art).

The structural completion of the hall with the Pergamon Altar and the North Wing with the newly installed Museum für Islamische Kunst is planned for 2025. The opening of this section of the museum is expected in spring 2027. We appreciate your understanding for the inconvenience resulting from the closures.
