November 2013 sees the Staatliche Museen's Kunstbibliothek and Berlin's Universität der Künste join forces to launch a new collaborative project at the Museum für Fotografie. Jointly conceptualized, the exhibition series Seen By invites guest curators to present their individual perspective on works by students at the Berlin University of the Arts. In the Museum für Fotografie which the Kunstbibliothek oversees, the students are given a new platform on which to showcase their works.
The inspiration behind the Seen By series comes from the exhibition Mit der Spur beginnen, curated by the art historian Akiko Bernhöft. In the reference to 'traces' in the show's title, Akiko Bernhöft lays the focus not on the exhibition's end result, but on a common conceptual starting point from which each student has worked in developing the exhibits. This shift in focus thus reverses conventional curatorial practice. The final works on show amount to a commentary by the artists themselves, as they raise various questions regarding visibility, shifting perceptions, and the materiality of the works.
The eight participating artists (Clara Jo, John A. MacLean, Leon Kahane, Michael Roggon, Nina Schuiki, Luca Vanello, Eva Vuillemin and Lisa Woite) each adopt very different approaches to the media of photography and video. Their works often test the limits of their chosen medium and reveal how it interacts and frequently merges with other media. The works on display present our familiar environment in a new light. In the process, the fleeting and incidental become shaping forces, while the presence of absence makes itself felt.
Kicking off the exhibition series, Start with the Traces poses the question of what and how we see. Or, alternatively one could say that the series starts out asking what we often don't see.
