Koordinierung Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa
The "Koordinierung Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa" was incorporated into the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in 2004 and is dedicated to the study of a range of subjects concerning the cultural history of Eastern Europe, a region that has been particularly affected by rapid change and transformation since 1989. Our mission is to increase awareness of this region within the western European populace and to foster cross-border cultural projects that are realised together with various institutions in participating countries.
The centre provides an international platform for discourse at different levels on issues pertinent to current socio-political issues and development policy. Subjects such as 'cultural contacts/cultural conflicts', 'minorities/majorities' and 'tradition/innovation' form a common thread throughout these projects. Serving as a mediator between institutions in east and west Europe, the centre fosters and supports long-term research too. Creating lasting partnerships and ongoing research is of utmost importance to the interdisciplinary network.
The centre also develops new forms of presentation and makes use of public space to an unusual extent. The exhibition format MOLDOVAmobil, for example, was created to introduce the country of Moldova to Berlin, Leipzig and Mannheim in 2010, and since 2012 has even been used as a mobile platform for the presentation of projects initiated by various institutions and NGOs within the Republic of Moldova.
Travelling exhibitions, such as "Encounters" which was held in Germany and in each of the countries presented in the project, are a further example of new formats created by the centre that aim to reflect and explore the visitor’s understanding of the 'other' and the concept of >'otherness'.
In cooperation with partners from Germany and Eastern Europe, the centre has been able to organise exhibitions and publications on topics of transnational interest (www.divercity.jpm.hu, www.dzm-museum.de/deutsche-ungarn/). Plans for future initiatives are already underway. The exhibition "Casa mare", for instance, presents works by photographer Frank Gaudlitz, which were taken in different countries in East-Central and southeast Europe, and aims to stimulate a meaningful dialogue on its tour of the continent.
The "Koordinierung Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa" is sponsored directly by the German Minister of State and Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs.
