Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), the great Jesuit scholar and founder of the China Mission, was the most important agent conveying ideas of the European renaissance in China. At the same time, he gave Europe its first methodical insight into the history, geography, culture and economy of China.
After Macerata (Matteo Ricci's home town), and Rome, the Museum of East Asian Art is the third station of this exhibition dealing with Ricci's life and work. The Berlin exhibition presents, in addition, the work of famous followers of Matteo Ricci in Beijing. Among these were Adam Schall von Bell (1592-1666) from Cologne, and the Belgian Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688).
The world of Chinese art of the Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) is illustrated by selected works from the Museum of Eastern Asian Art.
